Phelps, known as arguably the greatest swimmer of all time and the most decorated Olympian ever with a total of 28 medals, required an immense amount of energy to support his rigorous training regimen. His breakfast alone included three fried-egg sandwiches, a five-egg omelette, a bowl of grain, three slices of French toast, and three chocolate-chip pancakes, followed by hefty lunches and dinners comprising pounds of pasta, large sandwiches, pizzas, and energy drinks, as detailed by The Telegraph.

However, Phelps’ commitment to his sport went beyond just a high-calorie diet. His training routine was nothing short of extraordinary, swimming 80,000 metres each week, undergoing double sessions three times a week, and focusing on recovery through ice baths, stretching, working with a trainer, massages, and sleeping in a chamber at 9,000 feet, as revealed in an interview with Men’s Journal. Phelps himself emphasised the importance of sleep in his recovery process, aiming to ensure his body was ready for the next race or training session.

The intensity and volume of Phelps’ training set him apart from other Olympic swimmers. His coach, Bob Bowman, highlighted the individualised nature of Phelps’ training regimen, which was tailored to his specific needs, according to Men’s Journal. This meticulous approach contributed to Phelps’ historic performance at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where he won eight gold medals, surpassing Mark Spitz’s record and becoming a legend in the world of sports.

Charles Duhigg, in his book The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business, outlined Phelps’ race day routine during the 2008 Games, starting with a breakfast of eggs, oatmeal, and energy shakes, and followed by a precise stretching and warm-up routine, demonstrating the athlete’s disciplined approach to his sport.

Post-retirement, Phelps has significantly adjusted his routine and diet. In a 2021 interview with GQ, he shared that his daily calorie intake no longer reaches the heights of his swimming days. Despite only sleeping for about 3 to 5 hours a night, he prioritises this time for mental preparation and physical training.

Johnson’s workout routine is diverse and intense, focusing on different body parts each day. He employs a mix of dumbbells, cables, barbells, and machines. He explained his approach to Bodybuilding.com, saying, “My workout is constantly changing and adapting, but for the most part, I do 4 sets of 12 reps with a 60-90-second rest. I don’t play around in the gym. I always aim to be the hardest worker.”

The Rock’s Diet

The action superstar’s dietary approach is as structured as his workout routine. He eats five meticulously planned and measured meals a day. He starts his day with protein and carbs, saying, “Usually I start off my day with some dead cow and oatmeal for breakfast.”

His diet is diverse, including proteins like chicken, steak fillets, egg whites, complex carbs such as oatmeal, rice, vegetables like broccoli, asparagus, peppers, mushrooms, and onions, and casein protein.

The Rock’s Sunday cheat meals have gained fame, often shared on his social media. These indulgent meals, which he believes in earning through hard work during the week, can range up to 5,000 to 6,000 calories, featuring items like pancakes, burgers, sushi, and cheesecake. “I do believe in working hard throughout the week and earning your cheat meals,” he told Delish in an interview.

The Dublin-born fighter’s approach to training and nutrition has evolved significantly over his career, especially following key fights that reshaped his perspective on preparation. 

In the early days of his career, the Irish champion was not a fan of strict routines. He preferred spontaneity in his training, believing in working out based on instinct rather than a fixed schedule. “I train when I feel like training. I operate on my own time,” he said in a 2015 interview with Men’s Journal. This approach, while unorthodox, proved effective in his initial UFC fights, where he secured victories in the first two rounds, including a record-breaking 13-second knockout of Jose Aldo.

However, the fight against Nate Diaz at UFC 196 marked a turning point. McGregor, who usually fought at 155 lbs, moved up to 170 lbs for this fight. The weight gain, which allowed him to eat more freely, led to overtraining and affected his stamina, as he admitted after the fight: “Leading up to Diaz, I was fucked up from overtraining.” This loss prompted the former UFC champion to reassess his training and diet regimen.

The Role of Diet in McGregor’s Routine

For the rematch against Diaz at UFC 202, McGregor adopted a more structured approach. According to Artem Lobov, one of his training partners, speaking to Sky Sports, this change brought about visible improvements. The Notoriousalso focused on enhancing his endurance through cardiovascular training and a more disciplined diet.

Whether in or out of training camp, the UFC superstar typically consumes clean foods, including quality proteins, fruits, vegetables, and plenty of water, while generally avoiding carbohydrates except for sweet potatoes and butternut squash. In an interview with Ask Men, he detailed his diet: “I eat good meat – chicken, salmon, some steak – and a lot of quality greens and some fruits like bananas. I eat eggs – an omelet with my Americano for a late breakfast or brunch.”

Preparing for UFC 257 against Dustin Poirier, McGregor returned to the 155 lbs weight class, involving a more stringent diet and training routine. His nutritionist, Tristin Kennedy, played a significant role in this phase, providing a daily meal plan that included protein-rich foods, complex carbs, and essential vitamins and nutrients. Kennedy outlined the fighter’s diet to ESPN: Breakfast typically included oats with eggs and sautéed green leafy vegetables, followed by a series of balanced meals and snacks throughout the day, culminating in a dinner of Irish lamb stew with potatoes.

Larry Schwartz, writing for ESPN, emphasised  the Chicago Bulls icon’s unique ability to transcend his sport, attributing a significant part of his success to his intense workout regimen. This commitment to fitness was a cornerstone of his career, contributing to his reputation as an athlete whose fame and skill were inseparable.

Conditioning and Basketball Drills

The regimen that kept the NBA legend at the top of his game was diverse and demanding. Tim Grover, Jordan’s personal trainer, provides a glimpse into his daily routine during the challenging 1995–96 NBA season and while shooting the 1996 film, Space Jam. The Bulls player’s day would begin with a session in the dome, focused on conditioning. This included stretching, running, and basketball drills, specifically designed to improve his endurance and agility.

Grover, who began working with Jordan in 1989 to help him build strength and power, particularly against physical teams like the Detroit Pistons, tailored a comprehensive training program for him. This program focused on enhancing both upper and lower body strength, as well as core stability. Exercises included squats, leg extensions, weighted step-ups, biceps curls, deadlifts, good mornings, power cleans, and bench presses. Grover emphasised the importance of a strong core, stating, “If your core is strong, all of your muscles can produce more force and perform at a higher level.”

Staying Injury-Free

Injury prevention was another key aspect of the icon’’s training. According to Slam, Grover worked with Jordan on exercises that targeted often-neglected yet vital areas such as wrists, fingers, ankles, and toes. This approach not only enhanced the player’’s performance but also minimised the risk of injuries, allowing him to maintain his high level of play throughout the NBA season.

Jordan’s training routine also included unconventional methods. For example, on game days, while most players would rest or take a nap, the Bulls legend often played golf.
